In today’s world, new trends appear overnight and old ones fade into yesterday in the blink of an eye. Many of these trends are born in the virtual environment, and content marketing is one of them. For many people the term is still rather vague, so it is worth explaining a little.

So what is content marketing?

Content marketing is, as the term says, marketing. Just as marketing in general aims to bring together the wishes and needs of buyers with the goals of the seller, content marketing has a similar aim. The difference is that content marketing focuses on creating and publishing content, and then delivering it to the target audience.

Businesses all over the world have taken up content marketing as a way to introduce their products, services or even experiences. Put simply and logically, content marketing is advertising with a twist. That is exactly why you cannot put a full equals sign between a content marketing text and an advertising article. In reality, content marketing works best when every detail has been carefully thought through and the work is done professionally.

The most important aspects of content marketing:

  • focusing on the client’s existing needs
  • understanding the client’s needs
  • growing the audience and making it more diverse
  • creating an online environment for users and, through it, creating or growing online sales

Content marketing is used very often in blog posts. What matters most is that the content resonates with the client. That is why content marketing can include many types of content, for example:

  • guides
  • e-books
  • interviews
  • flyers
  • videos

Content marketing is valuable only when its creators know both the client’s wishes and their needs. Good content marketing can successfully improve a company’s competitiveness.

One of the most important things in content marketing is uniqueness and the ability to stand out. Even if the topic has been covered many times before, you have to find an angle that helps the client the marketing is aimed at relate to it more and find more detail in it. Winning the client’s trust also matters: these days it is normal to research a company before buying, either by asking previous clients for feedback or by reading the company’s website or blog. That is why it is important that the website or blog covers the topics the client needs to make their decision. Raising the client’s awareness is what wins their trust.

Why are content marketing and advertising not the same?

For many people the word “advertising” means something annoying, something they cannot be bothered to watch. That applies to TV commercials as well as the ads users have to face online. People are oversaturated with ads and banners, which is why tools like ad blockers are so widely used.

Content marketing, however, creates that “ad” and makes it useful in some way: educational, interesting or entertaining. It is exactly with these techniques and this kind of content that you can draw the client’s attention to that very “ad”. Amid the oversupply of advertising, content marketing texts are one of the most effective ways to get your message to your target group.

The difference also shows when you compare advertising copy with content marketing texts. Taking a company as an example: advertising copy mentions the company repeatedly, while a content marketing text mentions it only once. Another big difference is that advertising copy puts the emphasis on the company or the products being advertised, not on useful content.

The main advantage of content marketing is that it is available to the client always and at any time.
